A Brief History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11th, originally began as Armistice Day. It marked the end of World War I, which officially took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. In 1938, November 11th was made a legal holiday dedicated to the cause of world peace and primarily set aside to honor veterans of World War I.
However, after the significant involvement of American forces in World War II and the Korean War, the United States Congress amended the Act in 1954, replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans,” and November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
