cGMP and the CBD Industry

Since the legalization of CBD in 2018, the CBD industry has remained in its infancy stage. This scenario has in part been due to a lack of regulation and a shortfall of test results. As a result, consumers have been left with little guidance on determining the quality, effectiveness, and purity of CBD products. It has also created a segway for lesser companies to make questionable claims about the quality of their products. However, an FDA standard called the Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) may help consumers in determining the legitimacy of CBD Manufacturers. As a promising piece of guidance from the FDA, this post will explain why cGMP is alright with me.

cGMP Explained

According to the FDA website. “CGMPs provide for systems that assure proper design, monitoring, and control of manufacturing processes and facilities.” Originally designed for pharmaceutical manufacturing, this program is also designed to be flexible and adaptable.  Such versatility allows for best practices to be adopted while also maintaining the most up-to-date “Current” processing and testing procedures.

cGMP and CBD

If used properly the cGMP helps to regulate the processing of raw materials into finished goods for human consumption. Similar to foods & drugs, CBD production the cGMP regulates the quality of finished consumer goods containing CBD. This certification means that these CBD products would be certified to be produced safely, hygienically, and using best practices. This, in combination with the product’s Certificate of Analysis (COA), would ensure the consumer was purchasing a safe, clean, accurately labeled, and effective product.

cGMP Alright With You

As the CBD industry continues to grow more effective solutions to regulate the quality of CBD products continually evolve. Unfortunately, the number of companies that take advantage of consumers in this semi-regulated industry also continues to grow. For this reason, an increasing number of legitimate hemp products and CBD processors are seeking to gain a cGMP certification. In addition to asking for a COA, it is advisable to also inquire about the cGMP status of the manufacturer of a product. If you are purchasing from a reputable and knowledgeable retailer, cGMP will be alright with them too!
