What are Medical Scripts?
“Medical scripts” (also called medical cannabis recommendations or medical marijuana cards) are state-authorized documents from a physician that allow patients to legally access medical cannabis under specific health conditions.
Who Qualifies for a Medical Script?
Each state defines qualifying conditions—many include chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, seizures, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and others. As of July 2025, 40 U.S. states have legalized medical cannabis under defined qualifying conditions.
Script vs. Prescription:
What’s the Difference?
A prescription is issued by a physician for FDA-approved drugs.
A medical script or recommendation for cannabis is not an FDA prescription—cannabis remains a Schedule I substance federally, so doctors recommend, but don’t prescribe.
In Kentucky, Governor Beshear’s 2023 executive order allows Kentuckians with qualifying conditions to legally possess up to 8 ounces with a recommendation—but you still cannot purchase cannabis within the state
Where Can You Fill a Medical Script?
- In-state retail sales not yet available. Kentucky’s program is possession-only; no dispensaries inside the state.
- Out-of-state options: Nearby states like Illinois and Ohio allow filling scripts there, though limitations vary. Colorado, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and others permit out-of-state cardholders to purchase medical cannabis, if reciprocity rules apply
- Travel caution: Even with a valid script, crossing state lines with cannabis can carry legal risks—what’s legal in KY may not be legal to transport across borders.

1. It’s not a prescription.
Medical scripts are recommendations, not prescriptions—cannabis remains federally unapproved.
2. You can’t buy locally.
Kentucky allows possession (up to 8 oz) but has no local dispensaries
3. Out‑of‑state dispensaries may help.
Nearby states may allow purchases with your script, if they permit reciprocity.
4. Be travel-aware.
Driving with cannabis across state lines can trigger legal trouble—even with a script.
5. Watch for scams.
Many services sell “medical scripts”—but not all are legitimate or necessary. Know what you’re paying for.
